2.5 Back

The Phillies dropped game 3 of the series and fall to 2.5 games back in the NL East with a Mets win. The Phillies had plenty of chances, but fell just short, 4-3.

The 45 year old continues to amaze. Moyer pitched outstanding once again. He lasted 6.2 innings. He gave up 2 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits. He walked 3, and struck out 4 earning the no decision.

The Nationals scored their first run on a Chase Utley error. A dead double play ball could of got Moyer and the Phillies out of the inning. Instead, the throw was wide and a run scored.

Utley would get that run back with an RBI single of his own to tie the game.

In the 7th, another Phillies fielding mistake cost the Phillies a run. A very tough play for Jimmy Rollins, but he made the stop. However, bobbled the ball before he could throw. A run scored to give the Nationals a 2-1 lead.

But once again, the Phillies fought back. Shane Victorino scored on a ground out. Then, Carlos Ruiz hit a solo homerun, his third of the season.

Ryan Madson could not hold the lead out of the bullpen. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in just .1 inning of work and earning the loss. Ryan Zimmerman scored on a ground out, and Austin Kearns drove in a run for the Nationals.

The Phillies had plenty of opportunities, but did not capitalize. Leadoff runners didn't score. Runners in scoring position didn't score. The two big ones were when Pat Burrell grounded into an inning ending double play with a runner in scoring position and Chris Coste grounding out to end the game with Victorino on 3rd base. As a team, the Phillies left 13 men on base.

A tough schedule for the Phillies is coming up. The Phillies will try to redeem themselves when the take on the Dodgers at home. The Dodgers swept them last week in Los Angeles. After the Dodgers, the Phillies play the current National League East leaders, the New York Mets.
