The Phillies continue to cut down on their list of arbitration eligible players. The next name crossed off the list is Jayson Werth. Werth was due to be a free agent after the 2009 season, but the Phillies signed Werth to a 2 year, $9 million deal.Werth originally wanted $4 million a year, but the Phillies offered $3M. Now Werth will be making $4.5M per year.
Before he became a Phillie, Werth suffered through many injuries, missing time causing him to be released.
The Phillies gave him a chance picking him up after the 2006 season. Werth batted .273 with 24 HR and 67 RBI in 2008. He had an OPS of .861.
In other arbitration news, the Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration with Jonathan Papelbon, signing him to a one year, $6.25 million deal.
Although Erik Bedard made just 15 starts missing most of the 2008 season, the Seattle Mariners avoided arbitration signing him for $7.75 with incentives.
