Greinke Wins Cy; Managers of the Year

Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals was deservedly named the 2009 American League Cy Young winner.

The 25-year old went 16-8 on a dismal Royals' team. Greinke led the major leagues in earned run average (2.16), walks/hits per innings pitched (1.07) and home runs per nine (0.4). In 229.1 innings, Greinke fanned 242, a strikeout ratio of 9.5 per nine. He only walked 51 and allowed 11 homers. Opponents batted .230 against the All Star right hander.

Charlie Manuel finished sixth in the National League Manager of the Year voting. Manuel finished in second place in 2007 and 2008. Colorado manager Jim Tracy won this year’s award. Tracy took over for Clint Hurdle in May.

Tracy ran away with the votes, tallying 151 points. Not only did Tracy lead the Rockies to a wild card berth and win Manager of the Year, he received a new, three-year contract.

In the American League, Mike Scioscia won the Manager of the Year. Scioscia's Angels made it to the American League Championship Series, despite losing their pitcher Nick Adenhart in a tragic accident.

Scioscia, who has been managing the Angels for 10 years, also won the same award in 2002.

Escalona, Tracy Recalled

Sergio Escalona and Andy Tracy have been called up. Rodrigo Lopez was released in order to make room for Tracy on the 40-man roster.

Escalona was recalled from Double-A Reading. He is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA with the Phillies this season. Left handed hitters are batting .143 against him.

Tracy adds depth to the Phillies bench. With the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, he hit .254 with 26 home runs and 96 runs batted in.

Pharm Phriday: All Star Edition

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs have three players headed to the All Star Game. Andrew Carpenter, Mike Cervenak and Andy Tracy were selected to represent the International League All Stars.

Carpenter is 7-1 with a 2.75 earned run average in 14 games. Carpenter earned his first Major League win when he was called up earlier this season to start against the Washington Nationals.

Cervenak is batting .311 with 10 home runs and 66 runs batted in. Cervenak, 33, was selected to be an All Star last season, but did not play due to his promotion to the Major Leagues. Tracy is tied for second in the International League in home runs with 14.

The Reading Phillies have four players selected for the Eastern League: Joe Savery, Neil Sellers, Michael Taylor, and Vance Worley.

Savery and Taylor were selected by the fans. Savery leads the Eastern League with 10 wins. He also has a 3.08 ERA Taylor leads the league with a .348 batting average. Taylor is second in the league with a 1.009 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Sellers is batting .300 with 8 home runs and 44 RBI.

Worley is 5-4 with a 3.63 ERA. As always, Phoul Ballz gives a great interview with his most recent being with Worley.

Both All Star games will be held on July 15.

Jenkins to DL

Geoff Jenkins was placed on the Disabled List prior to today's game. Jenkins suffered a right hip flexor strain during Friday's game while running down the first base line.

Jenkins and the Phillies are unsure of how long he will be out.

Jenkins, a normal everyday player, has been platooning this year with Jayson Werth. Jenkins is hitting .246 with 9 HR and 29 RBI with a very low .698 OPS. None the less, a disappointing year for the Brett Favre look-alike, who spent his entire career prior to this year with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Infielder Andy Tracy, for Triple-A Leigh High Valley was called up. Tracy hit .288 with 21 HR and 84 RBI with the Iron Pigs.

Tracy last played in the Major Leagues with the Colorado Rockies in 2004. He also played with the Montreal Expos in 2000 and 2001. He has 13 career major league homeruns in 263 ABs.

Werth will take over responsibilities as an everyday player in right field. Werth is hitting .267 with 17 HR and an .848 OPS. This is the perfect time for a player like Werth to step up and help the team win.
