The closer of the 1980 World Series Championship team was Tug McGraw, number 45. The closer of the 2008 World Series Championship team is Brad Lidge, number 54. 45 and 54. Hmmm...
It is strange that these numbers are opposite from one another. Perhaps the biggest opposite came on how they clinched the Championship.
After the final out of the 1980 World Series, Tug McGraw leaped off the mound and into the air with his arms up. His teammates surrounded him. In 2008, Brad Lidge went down to his knees with his arms ups in the air. His teammates tackled him to start a dog pile. Jumping, and falling. Hmmm...
The outcome of the game was the same. A World Series Championship. But how they did it was the same.
In 1980, Tug McGraw struck out Willie Wilson to end the game. In 2008, Brad Lidge struck out Eric Hinske. Both ended on strikeouts.. Hmmm...
A coincidence? Sure. Destiny? Maybe. Two red flags in centerfield look much better than one.
